Trauma-Responsive Practices

Green area with three positive message signs

“Our nation is facing a new public health threat. Accelerated but not solely caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, feelings of anxiety and depression have grown to levels where virtually no one can ignore what is happening. A CNN/Kaiser Family Foundation poll put a number to it: 90% of Americans feel we are in a mental health crisis.” — PewTrusts.org

We see this every day in our work: educators, mental health professionals, and family members are struggling to support children, youth, and families in the midst of a public mental health crisis. The system is overwhelmed, and professionals and parents are depleted.

So this month may be a good time to take an hour out of your busy schedule on July 24 to connect with others and learn how movemindfully trauma-responsive practices can become an important resource for you and the children, youth, and families you support.

When the nervous system is overwhelmed, we can’t easily connect with others or take in new information. If trauma is “too much, too fast, too soon,” the way to heal trauma is to learn how to ease symptoms of overwhelm. In this sixty-minute online event you will:

  • Experience simple Breathe Move Rest practices you can use for your own  stress-management and to prevent burnout.
  • Create a simple plan for sharing “portable coping skills” with clients, students, and your own family members.
  • Develop key messages that demonstrate the “why” behind these strategies, so that even the most reluctant individuals will give them a try.

Here’s a movemindfully practice for yourself right now. Take a moment and rub your hands together to create friction/warmth, then cover your eyes. Take a few slow breaths as you give yourself a break from the day.

Notice how you feel after that quick and easy reset. Something as simple as allowing the muscles in your face to relax while taking a break from visual input can change how you feel in just a few slow breaths.

Register here to learn more trauma-responsive portable coping skills you can use right away!
